The Wire - Front Page&Double page semiotic Analysis
- the masthead is bold and the largest piece of text amongst the entire front page which attracts the audience to what they're reading. → the neutral colour of the white front in front of the grey toned blue background creates a subtle and minimalist house style with a relaxed nature.
- The simplistic house-style of the front cover is also a reflection of Matana Roberts and her image/style. she is an artist of the Jazz genre who's a saxophonist , vocalist and composer.
- The mise-en-scene of her image and style is also a reflection her niche music , through her grudge and edgy aesthetic with her dreadlocks and nose piercing. this look isn't one of a mainstream 'pop' artist who has to follow a particular look to fit their representation
- The large spacing between her name makes it stand out and attract the readers eye creating a focus on the artist and who she is.
- the unconventional positioning of the bar code adds to the niche genre of Matana but also adds to the tone of difference that she reflects possibly conveying that you can be different and quirky , nobody needs to be conventional and follow stereotypes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Upon my research I found this article very interesting to look at and see especially because of its unique use of image and layout.
- To begin with the main image on the page is of two cigarettes , this image and topic differs from what is typically reported on the magazine which is meant to be correlated with the world of music.
- Perhaps the use of this topic in a music magazine is to promote the importance of the issue.
- The image is really interesting to look at as the two cigarettes are edited and positioned to look as if it is a weapon perhaps a catapults. with the use of the cigarettes being imaged as a catapult could be a hidden message from the gate keeper that smoking cigarettes may have no initial harm at first but will slowly and gradually start to cause harm and eventually kill you.
- After seeing this article and image the editors and journalist would be hopeful that the readers would take this message on as now in the modern day people are aware of the harm they can cause and are being more conscious to live a healthy and better life making sure to look after their well being.
- The large headline ' In search of galleries , collectors and representation ' connotes that the image is in fact a piece of art which emphasises the spoken message as all art has meaning and a hidden message.
- The small blocks of text are laid around and through the image giving the reader no choice but to notice and take on the images message.
Strong points made. Use print toolkit to structure points and expand - treat this as an unseen text as you have prepared for Comp 1.
